The Hyde Park Youth Symphony (HPYS) announced today the appointment of Ms. Andrea Ferguson as String Orchestra and Preparatory String Director for HPYS. In this position, Ms. Ferguson will lead the organization's two string ensembles, which focus on beginning and intermediate young musicians from elementary, middle, and high schools. Ms. Ferguson is an experienced teacher with deep connections to the Chicago music scene, having played in local youth orchestras and studied at DePaul University as a violinist and music educator.
“We are thrilled to welcome Andrea to the team at HPYS,” said Matthew Sheppard, HPYS artistic director and conductor. “She is a thoughtful and charismatic educator, and I'm looking forward to the joyful and meaningful experiences she brings to our students next year.”
“We are fortunate to have Andrea join our organization” said Linda Diamond Shapiro, HPYS board president. “She has the special skills and energy to work with our youngest students and give them a fabulous education. Her work, drive, and commitment will continue to move us toward being the leading grass roots organization for instrumental music education on Chicago’s South Side.”
HPYS will also be retaining Tim Corpus as Executive Director. Since March of 2021 he has served in an interim capacity following the announcement of PS & SO Conductor Lindsay Wright’s appointment as Assistant Professor at Yale University. Tim served as the first Executive Director for the Hyde Park Youth Symphony in 2016. Since then, he has worked with a number of arts organizations including the Lake Forest Symphony, Charlotte New Music Festival, Axiom Brass Quintet, Opera Festival of Chicago, and many more.
Andrea Ferguson is currently the Orchestra Director for Hauser Junior High School in Riverside, Illinois, a position she has held since 2018, and is a member of the Illinois American String Teachers Association executive board. Andrea received her musical training at DePaul University where she studied violin with Ilya Kaler and received her Bachelor of Music Education degree.
A Chicago-area native, Andrea began studying violin at the age of nine. She was an active participant in the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras for five years and a student in the Music Institute of Chicago’s Academy program for advanced young musicians.
