Community Beginner Programs

The Hyde Park Youth Symphony is driven to provide music education opportunities to students throughout Chicago's South Side.

These Community Beginner Programs establish music education programs where students do not currently have easy access to programs. Additionally, students are provided access to instruments through the HPYS instrument library and financial assistance. Separate from our flagship ensembles, the Community Beginner Programs are group learning classes for the local community.

The Community Starter Strings program, operated through St. Thomas the Apostle School provides opportunities for students to learn the fundamentals of playing a string instrument in a joyful and supportive teaching environment.

Located on-site in Auburn-Gresham, the Community Brass Band includes 25 students from nearby schools who are just starting their adventures in music performance. The team-taught classes encompasses all aspects of music education, including playing brass instruments, learning to read music, and exploring different elements of music and composition.
